LIVE REVIEW: Huey Morgan, Our Man In The Field, Saint Luke’s, Glasgow, 15/10/2026

The King of New York is back on tour, yes the one and only Huey Morgan … musician, writer, broadcaster and many other things brings the 1996 Fun Lovin’ Criminals album Come Find Yourself back to life for the 30th Anniversary tour. Those memorable days in the mid-1990s when tracks such as Scooby Snacks and King Of New York were the soundtracks to our year doesn’t seem that long ago.

Saint Luke’s is high on the list of our favourite Glasgow venues, set in a refurbished church that dates back to 1837 the old building just oozes history. Our Man In The Field is the support for the tour that began in Edinburgh’s La Belle Angele the previous night, a focus on mostly Americana style of music has London-based Alex Ellis take to the stage for a half-hour solo acoustic performance. With three albums behind him already he gets the crowd warmed up nicely for what was to come. Alex is a great storyteller and shares with us that he grew up watching American rodeo and that Glasgow was one of the last places to host such events, he is absolutely right of course, Buffalo Bill aka. William Cody brought his rodeo shows to Glasgow in 1891 & 1904. Silverado is his recent album and the title track is played to perfection tonight while last song Something Has Got To Be Done leaves the crowd to ponder the current state of things in the political field. 7/10

We have a DJ set from the one and only Mateo DiFontaine to entertain us between bands, this show is completely sold out and as Frank Sinatra classic New York, New York blasts out on the PA Huey Morgan and his band take to the stage at 8.30pm to a massive roar. We are up in the balcony for this show and have the best seats in the house way up in the back row as the set begins with The Fun Lovin’ Criminal that was also the opener on the Come Find Yourself album. We all sing along to the chorus “Stick ‘em up punk, it’s the fun lovin’ criminal” , what a joyful way to start the set. We did wonder if Huey would play the album in sequence but as next track Back On The Block was from the 1998 album 100% Colombian there was our answer to that question. The band move between both albums with ease covering all the bases with a mix of hip-hop, rock funk, soul and blues keeping the crowd interested, Passive/Aggressive was high on the list of our favourite tracks back in the day and it still is. Huey Morgan released his memoir last year and it is well worth a read, before The Grave And The Constant he talks about his time in the US Marines and his struggle to move back to civilian life. Next up is Smoke ‘Em, another crowd pleaser while King Of New York electrifies the room with a mass singalong “La di da di, free John Gotti”, for those unaware John Gotti was the King Of New York and head of the Gambino crime family in New York City.

It’s not long until the portion of the nineteen-track set that everyone was looking forward to, Come Find Yourself, Up On The Hill, Scooby Snacks and Love Unlimited all have the room reaching fever pitch. Scooby Snacks has samples from Reservoir Dogs (1992) and Pulp Fiction (1994) and resonates with the audience while Love Unlimited has the lines that we all love to join in with “If Barry White saved your life/Or got you back with your ex-wife”. I Can’t Get With That & Big Night Out end the main set but everyone knows the band aren’t quite finished yet, they have already been on the stage for ninety minutes and have four songs in the encore to send us all home happy. Korean Bodega from 100% Colombian is followed by Methadonia and a cover of The New Yorkers track Shanique.

As the set moves to a close after one-hour-fifty-minutes there is only one the night can end with … We Have All The Time In The World, a cover of the Louis Armstrong classic. Multi-instrumentalist Adrian Gautrey was a standout tonight (alongside Huey naturally!) and the overall performance from the band was superb. Now we can all ponder if a 2028 30th anniversary tour of the Fun Lovin’ Criminals album 100% Colombian will be the next time we see Huey Morgan on tour? Here’s hoping! 10/10
