Irish noise-pop/alt-rock sextet THUMPER released their debut album Delusions Of Grandeur last month, a coming-of-age record that that delivers a captivating blend of psychedelic and pop. We caught up with the band to discuss their formation, influences, ambitions and more.

Firstly, tell us a bit about yourself and your band.

We are a six-piece noise-pop band from Dublin.

How did the band form and how long have you been together?

THUMPER started as a solo moniker under which I recorded and released lo-fi bedroom recordings of tunes on tape and distributed them around Dublin. After forming a live band to play at festivals, the project morphed into a fully collaborative unit, and in 2019 we released the Out of Body Auto-Message EP. Later that year we started recording our debut album Delusions of Grandeur, which landed on shelves on 18th March 2022.

Can you remember the first time you realised you wanted to make music?

I wanted to be a comic book artist when I was a kid, until I discovered Green Day when I was about 11. Then I decided that I would be a world famous musician, which I am today.

Who and what are the band’s main influences?

Sonic Youth, ABBA, King Gizzard, Glen Campbell, Dandy Warhols, The Beatles

What do you aim to achieve as a band?

In the aftermath of being locked down for two years our goals are pretty simple. We just want to make the best music that we can, and have the opportunity to share it with people. There’s only so many sterile livestreams that you can do before you realise that human connection is one of the most important elements of making music.

For those who are yet to see you live, what can they expect from a THUMPER show?

As intense as an argument, but as sensual as making up.

What’s next for THUMPER?

If you live on earth we will be touring near you. Check out out website HERE or follow us on Insta @thumper_666 for all intel and info.

A 30-something year old journalist and freelance PR often found at a gig, a festival or holding a dictophone to a band and asking them all kinds of questions. I'm a sucker for whiskey and vinyl.
