Two years on from the release of their wildly successful album Gary, featuring all the funk you’ve come to demand from Blossoms, they are back with a new album and their biggest headline shows yet.
Songs From The Wedding Cake focuses on the euphoria and despair marriage can throw at someone, all wrapped up in ten songs and less than fifty minutes. As is the format for album releases these days, gone are the times when the whole album is released in one fell swoop – this is perhaps due to the power of streaming services.
The songs already witnessed, Joke About Divorce, which happens to be the first track on the record, and Meet Me In Love both hold the funk-inspired influence that weave through all of Blossoms‘ past records.
The humour in the lyricism that made Blossoms‘ popularity soar still remains on Additional Driver (featuring Declan McKenna) and Uma Thurman, “Like the bride in Kill Bill / You’re My Uma Thurman.”
Collectively the album is perhaps not arena ready, nonetheless there are standout tracks on Songs From The Wedding Cake, notably; Additional Driver, Meet Me In Love and the lyrically hilarious Uma Thurman.
Alongside the extensive back catalogue of songs Blossoms have amassed since their inception, Songs From The Wedding Cake only enhances their status as Stockport’s finest indie-rock band.
