Shortly after performing on the main stage at TRNSMT Festival last summer, we caught up with Alex Moore, Scott Concepcion, Ryan Durrans and Matty Murphy of Wigan band The Lathums.
When did you first pick up an instrument?
Scott: nine or ten, when my grandad used to play a bit of guitar and he taught me a few things. My mum and dad got me a guitar for Christmas.
Ryan: I was about 12 when I got my first drum kit.
Alex: I’ve been carrying my instrument for 25 years now! Not that instrument, these instruments [pointing to his lungs].
Matt: it’s been three years this week since I joined the band, it came up on my Instagram.
S: Did you like Cobblestones? Matt was amazing on that one today.
Can you walk us through the recording process for Cobblestones?
S: We wrote that one years and years ago. It was in the first album demos, that’s how long ago! It just needed to be updated a bit.
When can we expect album number four?
S: Gonna start getting some tunes together for it, this one could be a different direction. Change it up a bit.
What’s the best festival you have played at?
S: We played one in the Netherlands a few weeks and it was amazing.
One for Alex, what are your musical influences?
A: Quite soulful music, my mum used to listen to a lot of it. That’s where I got my singing influence from, from the heart.
How important is it to you to have local bands supporting?
A: Blossoms helped us out a bit on the way up. So we think its important to keep that tradition going.
What’s it like living in Wigan?
R: Supreme. Including the football team. We recorded a song for the club when they went into administration.
Thanks for your time today guys – we’re excited to hear what’s instore for album number four!
