Five Minutes With

MUSIC FEATURE: Five Minutes With…BAEST

Danish quintet BAEST are setting their sights on world domination, as the release of their third album Necro Sapiens has cemented them as one of the most promising acts to emerge from the death metal scene. We caught up with the band ahead of the release to discuss their formation, influences, ambitions and what you can expect from their live show when they tour with Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals later this year.

Firstly, tell us a bit about yourself and your band.

BAEST consists of Lasse, Sebastian, Simon, Svend and Muddi. A five-piece death metal outfit, from Aarhus, Denmark. We’ve been playing since 2015, and just released our third album Necro Sapiens, through Century Media Records. FFO: Morbid Angel, Carcass, Opeth.

How did the band form and how long have you been together?

We met in the heavy metal bars of Aarhus, and have been playing for five and a half years!

Can you remember the first time you realised you wanted to make music?

Svend and Lasse met up after a night of heavy drinking, and tried playing some riffs together. Specifically, Symbolic by Death. We quickly realised that it worked, and actually wrote most of Bones, our first single/song, that afternoon in 2015.

Who and what are the band’s main influences?

Mikael Åkerfeldt inspires us immensely with all his projects. The greats of death metal have a big role in our sound as well. Different bands/artist that inspire us as well: Rush, Jethro Tull and Michael Flatly… don’t ask.

What do you aim to achieve as a band?

World dominance!

For those who are yet to see you live, what can they expect from a BAEST show?

Expect a journey back to the mid-eighties, and prepare to drop ya damn jaw. We enjoy our shows, and it really shows. It’s fun, let’s drink and enjoy ourselves!

What’s next for BAEST?

Necro Sapiens is really exploding at the moment, so that’s really awesome. Now we are just waiting for the tour with Phil Anselmo!
