If you love metal with huge nu-core groove and a whole lot of attitude then look no further than Scarlet, who released her debut album Obey The Queen last week via Arising Empire. We caught up with the Swedish metal queen to discuss one of her recent singles #BOSSBITCH, from a new writing process to behind the scenes stories and more.

Can you give us your quick elevator pitch on this track? Why does this one standout for you?

This song is called #BOSSBITCH and is a tribute to all ladies in the genre and an anthem for women everywhere.

For me as an artist it stands out because of two things:

  1. It’s the first time I wrote with more than two people – for this song we were seven songwriters.
  2. It’s the first time I had someone feature on a song.

How did you tackle the writing process for the song? Was there anything unique about this track compared to your usual/previous approach?

Since there were so many people involved with the writing, it was a totally new process for me. I had to let go of control and dictatorship, or at least almost ;). The unique thing for this track is that it’s about female empowerment and as writers we were three women and four men. It’s not just my voice writing, its all of our voices. Both women and men.

Can you tell us how the song’s theme came about?

I wanted to create a positive vibe around the word bitch. I’ve been called a bitch so many times in my life so it must be a good word ;)

Tell us about the video, do the themes of the single transfer to the video?

In the video we take you to our little dungeon where we live with our servants. Just a sneak peak of a day in a life of a #bossbitch. We want every video to tell the visual version of the song :)

Do you have any behind the scenes stories from the video shoot?

We were about 20 people in an abandoned factory cellar outside Gothenburg and it was quite tricky arranging the scenes, carrying the props up and down a half broken steel stairway. Also, this was filmed during the outbreak of COVID-19 so it was a lot of work just keeping everyone safe and following the guidelines from the government. We had THE WORST smelling hand sanitiser in the history of hand sanitisers! It smelled like a sick cat’s piss and poisoned the whole crew, but at least we kept clean!

Anything else you’d like to add for our readers?

Just want to take the opportunity to thank all the people who support me and my crew. I’m very grateful.
