LIVE REVIEW: Chloe Slater, Vincent’s Last Summer, YES The Pink Room, Manchester, 01/03/2025
Chloe Slater is causing somewhat of a stir the industry, with many dubbing her a rising star of the future. The Bournemouth born singer-songwriter continued her spate of headline shows Manchester this evening. Given the recent hype around this fledgling indie songstress, it is no surprise to find a substantial crowd already in attendance as we arrived at YES tonight.
Shortly after our arrival, we are greeted by the swagger and confidence of tonight’s support band. Hailing from Manchester, Vincent’s Last Summer make no apologies for there arrival and getting the night started. Clad in sunglasses and a Jarvis Cocker-inspired outfit the lead singer spouts, “How we fucking doing Manchester?”. to an applause from the crowd. Beginning with Motorway, it doesn’t take long for the crowd to begin reacting with the odd foot shuffle and head bop here and there. During Vincent’s Last Summer’s short set, there are no questions about the charisma and confidence this band already possess. Alongside the undeniably catchy and funky songs they have performed this evening, there are clear talents here too.
The further the set progresses, the audience becomes larger and they begin to visibly enjoy the remainder of the bands set. Notable songs that deserve a mention include; Doing It For The Country, Motorway and Hotline. An incredibly assured performance from a band at the start of their journey, one that was enjoyed by band and audience alike this evening. 6/10
The wait between support and headline act is a short one this evening. As lights dim, Slater takes to the stage with a smile and an unassuming wave to the crowd. Anticipation and excitement begins to build around the venue from the audience as Slater starts Sucker. The first offering tonight comes from Slater’s most recent release Love Me Please, a five track EP which has already amassed thousands of streams on Spotify.
Currently residing in the City, the indie-songwriter seems excited to be here, “Manchester, how you doing tonight?” to a rousing reaction. “This next song is for anyone who’s got a shit landlord, I know a few!”, raising an issue that we’re sure many who currently live in the city face, with the rising costs of rents and living expenses. She continues to bounce around with that infectious grin on her face while playing Death Trap.
The hype surrounding Slater is obvious from the size of the crowd here tonight. Admittedly, it is not the biggest venue in Manchester but Slater still plays to a sold-out venue at the age of twenty two. Her influences range from Wolf Alice all the way to Brit Award winning Sam Fender, with a pitch of Wet Leg for good measure. She then addresses the crowd, still wearing the same wide smile she has all evening, “This is the first song I ever released so it’s pretty insane to be playing it to a sold out crowd” as she starts Sinking Feeling!.
As Slater continues to entertain the crowd, she appears somewhat apprehensive at the thought of playing the next song. With the band momentarily making an exit, leaving Slater alone onstage, she begins Harriet. With just an acoustic guitar adorned round her neck, her impressive vocal talents can be heard around the entire venue. Along with an exceptional cover of The Cure’s – Friday I’m In Love, the evening is finished with Fig Tree and no encore, much to the disappointment of a now buzzing crowd.
An exceptional evening of music from start to finish, headlined by a young and humble indie-songwriter with huge potential. 8/10
