Five Minutes With

MUSIC FEATURE: Five Minutes With…Florence Black

Hot on the heels of their debut album and a tour supporting Bokassa, rising rock trio Florence Black are showing no signs of slowing, now back out on the road with Phil Campbell & The Bastard Sons. We caught up with bassist Jordan ‘Foz’ Evans to find out more about Florence Black, including their formation, influences and ambitions.

Firstly, tell us a bit about yourself and your band.

I am Jordan Evans, but people know me as Foz – I play bass in Florence Black! We are a three-piece rock band from Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales.

How did the band form and how long have you been together?

We formed around December 2012, but knew each other before creating the band as we were in high school together. Perry and Tristan were actually in primary school together too!

Can you remember the first time you realised you wanted to make music?

To be honest, not really. I always loved music growing up and playing instruments is something I have always been interested in since a young age. I suppose it was high school when I made the decision that I wanted to play music. Throughout my teens I would practice, play in bands with friends, watch live shows and as many interviews of my favourite bands and artists as possible on YouTube. It was through this time that I discovered what I loved to do.

Who and what are the band’s main influences?

We listen to so many bands from a lot of different genres and take influence from all of them. I think everyone you listen to has something to teach you. We are all lovers of music in general so we write all types of music, but it is rock music that is closest to our hearts.

What do you aim to achieve as a band?

We want to play all over the world for as long as possible to as many people as possible. We aim to reach the top one step at a time!

For those who are yet to see you live, what can they expect from a Florence Black show?

We play like it’s our last show on earth, we just want people who come to our shows to have fun and to experience some great rock music!

What’s next for Florence Black?

Now that our debut album Weight of The World has been released we will be touring as much as possible and spreading our music far and wide! We recently play some shows in the UK with Bokassa. We already have a bank of songs written, so album two could already be in the pipeline, but we have also thought about writing the second album as a concept album – so who knows what the future might bring!
