Five Minutes With

MUSIC FEATURE: Five Minutes With…Starve

Australian metalcore newcomers Starve are set to take 2020 by storm, building on the chaos of their 2019 debut EP Mantis. The band’s latest single Shiver is an onslaught of angry riffs and scathing vocals, signalling the four-piece as one to watch this year. We caught up with the band to find out more about their influences and future plans.

Firstly, tell us a bit about yourself and your band.

My names Kylan, I play the drums in the chaotic metalcore band Starve. We just released our single Shiver a few weeks ago which is doing really well over here in Australia. We teamed up with Alpha Wolf’s Scottie Simpson who recorded, mixed and mastered the track. We opened up the year with a sold out Melbourne show supporting Stray From The Path and Kublai Khan TX – that was huge! We played to a sold out Stay Gold venue and instantly opened up the mosh. It was so great getting to share the stage with such monster bands that are huge influences to us.

How did the band form and how long have you been together?

The band began about a year and a half ago in Melbourne with Jordan (vocals) asking me to join. Followed by meeting Alessio (guitar) and more recently Ewan (bass). The Mantis EP was already finished when I joined the band, although we’ve now begun writing our next EP but we’re unsure of the release as of yet – stay tuned!

Who and what are the bands main influences?

Our main influences would have to be bands like Vein, Stray From The Path, The Devil Wears Prada and Boundaries. A lot of our influences are just the bands we love to listen to! Our vocalist Jordan has such a HUGE metal/hardcore interest, as well as Alessio who grew up in the New Zealand hardcore scene. While I came from being a musical drummer/jazz musician, so when I began to love these bands we wanted to try and create a similar chaotic sound. Vein are a main influence, we’re hoping that we can essentially become the Aussie version of them! That manic/weird vibe is so cool and well, different! We’re all about being different.

What do we aim to achieve as a band?

Honestly we want to play sick shows and enjoy other bands! We’re creating our own image and brand now which is something we’ve wanted to properly do for a while now, but definitely playing as many sick shows as we can is our goal. We would love to hit America and Europe next year!

What can people expect from a Starve live show?

Chaos. We begin our set. We play every song back to back. Non-stop. Chaos.

What’s next for Starve?

Next will be the Dealer, Varials and Honest Crooks Australia tour, followed by our next EP, which will be finished by the middle of the year. When it will be released is still to be confirmed.
