NEW NOISE: The Mysterines

Who: The Mysterines

Where: Liverpool, UK

What: Fuzzy, nostalgia-tinged rock

About:

Liverpool’s The Mysterines formed in 2017, several years after 19 year-old Lia Metcalfe (vocals & guitar) and 18 year-old George Favager (bass) met. “Me and George met when we were 13 outside a local shopping centre and then re met playing manhunt or something in the park with mutual friends,” Lia explains. “We started practising in my front room and I’d just play all my songs on an acoustic and he’d play along with his bass and then things just went from there really… After we finished a tour with Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, we went to go and watch one of their shows in Liverpool – which is where we met Paul (drums) and Callum (guitar) and now we’re the dream team haha.”

Since releasing their debut EP Take Control last summer The Mysterines have been going from strength to strength, supporting Royal Blood, Sea Girls and The Amazons, headlining the BBC Introducing stage at Reading Festival, finding fans in Jack Saunders, Steve Lamacq, Independent, Metro and more, the list goes on.

2020 shows no signs of slowing for the band, who released their new single Love’s Not Enough ahead of their almost sold-out UK headline tour, which kicks off later this month. “We are all very excited for the tour,” Lia says. “I didn’t expect it to sell as well as it has at all so its really shocked me and we are very grateful for everyone who’s coming down to the shows.”

When it comes to talent, it turns out the band aren’t just great musicians. “We all have a black belt in Karate,” she adds. “Paul actually has one in Jiu Jitsu too.”

Verdict:

The Mysterines really know how to write a good song. They concoct a sound that is both nostalgic and fresh in equal measure, take latest single Love’s Not Enough and 2019’s Who’s Ur Girl? as prime examples, with their fuzzy riffs and foot-stomping choruses which will no doubt sound huge in a live atmosphere. Talking of live shows, their upcoming headline tour is almost sold-out which, for a band on their debut EP, is highly impressive. If The Mysterines continue to propel in this direction their future will be looking very bright indeed.

What’s Next?

“More new music, lots of gigs/festivals/touring! A busy and exciting year ahead,” Lia concludes.

Sounds good to us, we’re excited to see what’s in store!
