Dubioza Kolektiv are back with their brand new album #fakenews, a unique blend of traditional Balkan elements with ska, punk, reggae, electronics, hip-hop and rock. Intrigued? You can see the Bosnian ska-punk party-rockers this month as they return to the UK for a series of headline shows. We caught up with the band ahead of the dates to hear their top tips and stories from the road.

Favourite thing about touring:

It’s a sense of freedom. Every day we go somewhere else, meeting all kinds of people. As the wise old man would say: Why is the dog chained to his house if the house isn’t that good?

Least favourite thing about touring:

When the last show on the tour ends.

Five essentials for the road:

Books, a lot of pirated movies and TV shows, weed, flight-case that contains set for making traditional Bosnian coffee, our instruments and backline (this can be useful on tour).

Your favourite way to pass the time:

Sleeping in a van is uncomfortable and a shitty experience, but it helps time pass faster while travelling. Sleeping is very important and a healthy activity, we try to exercise it whenever possible.

“The Most”

Memorable moment:

When we patented “Bosnian Tango” on stage at Down the Rabbit Hole Festival in Holland. Bosnian tango is a dance that we perform together with the audience at each show, just before the last song. Basically, every person in the venue has to hug each other and jump with us. It’s a dance that celebrates togetherness.

Hilarious moment:

During our last show in Bristol, at SWX, we divided the crowd into two groups to make some kind of a singing competition. Group No. 1 were people who voted against Brexit, and group No. 2 – people who supported Brexit. All people chose to be in group No. 1, except one Greek guy who lives in the UK. Fucking hilarious.

Embarrassing moment:

Each time tour the UK we have to apply for visas and wait for four stressful weeks to get our passports back. We are essentially grounded during that period because our passports are mailed and held somewhere, making it impossible for us to travel.

Outrageous moment:

A few weeks ago we invented and produced non-alcoholic alcohol rakija (Balkan’s traditional brandy) called 0%. People are still protesting all over social media, but we kinda like the copyright: “DRINK AND DRIVE”.

Drunken moment:

Two years ago, some people brought a 20-litre barrel of rakija backstage. No one remembers a single minute of that night.

Rewarding moment:

When border police are searching our vans for alcohol and drugs, but all they find is bottles of 0% non-alcoholic rakija. We kinda like to say: “Have one! Now you can drink on duty”.
