MUSIC INTERVIEW: The Sunday Sadness

French dark pop newcomers The Sunday Sadness are gearing up to release their debut self-titled EP. We caught up with the band to hear the stories of making the record, their influences beyond the music and what their plans for the rest of 2019.

Hey guys! Thanks for taking the time to chat to us. You release your debut self-titled EP soon, do you have any standout memories from recording the EP?

Last summer we spent a whole week in a house by the seaside to write and record all day and all night long. This was one of the best moments we’ve had with the band. We wrote several tracks that really mean a lot to us and that will be on our future full length. This might be the time we were the most efficient and creative in the band’s life. All our influences and ideas combined really made us evolve musically.

You mix older influences like 80s synthwave with newer hip-hop sounds, what inspired you to blend the two in this way?

It’s just what we love. We are huge vaporwave fans and are so into the lo-fi aspect that synthwave brings. This feeling of nostalgia and the things we picture in our heads while listening to this style of music is something we wanna share with our fans. For the hip-hop part, we actually listen to Post Malone, Chase Atlantic, Lil Xan, Lil Peep and many more a hell of a lot; we also love the way they gathered all the music communities. I guess it’s just the will of the band to merge all of the styles that we’re listening to right now or have listened to in the past.

Do you have influences beyond music that articulate your sound?

We get a lot of inspiration from our personal lives but also from what we observe from this modern society we live in, and how our generation handles all of these new things like social media/online presence and how it affects their real-life relationships. We’re trying to tell about this lost youth surrounded by people that can’t understand them and that are having such a hard time defining themselves.

You’re from Bordeaux, France – what was the music scene like growing up there?

There used to be a pretty active scene back in 2010 or so. They were many many emocore and metalcore bands, all influenced by Escape The Fate, My Chemical Romance, old Bring Me The Horizon, Alesana and stuff. You could go to a show almost once a week and they were actually quite a lot of people going. But all of these bands are not around anymore and the music scene in Bordeaux is dead now, that’s pretty sad.

Are there any local bands on your radar that you think we should check out?

We don’t know of any bands in our style but you need to check out our pop-punk bros from Back Garden Light.

Finally, what are your plans for 2019? Can we expect you to tour in the UK?

We have mainly worked in the studio for now in order to finish our first EP…and as soon as we did, we started writing our first full length which should be finished later this year! However we recently started working on the live aspect more and we’ll be looking for dates pretty soon, I’m pretty sure we’ll tour in the UK this year!

Thanks for taking the time to chat to us!
