Bring The Noise UK

LIVE REVIEW: Black Spiders, Islington Academy London, 29/10/12

Black-Spiders

The freaks are out every week at most London gigs… But this time there was the excuse of Halloween and the Metal Hammer Magazine’s now annual shindig to celebrate it. This year’s bill included Heaven’s Basement (who’ve been making a real dent on the live UK circuit of late), Huntress (to please the darker of the metal fans), The Defiled (getting into the spirit of things by dressing up as chicks – now THAT was scary) and Black Spiders.

Having been hidden away for most of the year writing (bar a trip to Donington for Download Festival and a prestigious support slot on the Thin Lizzy UK tour) and currently in the studio laying down tracks for the new album due out next year, Black Spiders’ return to London was a welcome one. Donning Misfit-esque face paint, the Halloween spirit was definitely in them… or maybe it was the other spirit doing the rounds that night. Blame the rum? Whatever it was, they blasted through their tracks with a vengeance and grit that kicked every person squarely in the face.

The band always encourage the crowd to raise a middle finger and shout out loud “FUCK YOU BLACK SPIDERS”. There were certainly some veteran Spider fans there tonight, despite this mixed bag of a line-up, as this confidently echoed round the venue. Crowd faves Just Like A Woman, Stay Down and Kiss Tried To Kill Me hit home like a sledgehammer to the bonce. Good to see drummer Tiger Si ferociously beating ten ton of shit out of his kit and bassist Irwin leaping about like a salmon as the tiny trio of guitarists beneath him roar away through each track. Most excitingly, we were treated to some newbies – Creatures, Dead Sleep and Cock Fight blasted through like they were already one of the well loved children in the family. Ending on another new track, Kill Your Friends, was perhaps a brave move but not when it pounds as hard as it does. Fuck You Black Spiders… and hurry up with that new album, 2013 deserves to be your year!

9/10
