Who: Cytota
Where: Birmingham
What: Melodic hardcore
About: Cytota formed in 2009 when life brought together the band’s founding members Joby Fitzgerald (lead vocals) and Harry Jennings (drums) at a Fightstar gig. The two decided to turn their love of metal into something more serious than just a hobby. Soon they were jamming together and after the addition of Youssef Ashraf (guitar) and Ollie Pike (bass), Cytota properly came about. Having dedicated a lot of time to practice, the newly-born collective hit the studio in 2010 to record their EP The Prosecutor with producers Jim Pinder and Carl Bown, who had previously worked with Trivium, Machine Head and While She Sleeps. This was followed by tireless touring, including support slots with Funeral For A Friend, While She Sleeps and Rise To Remain. In 2011 Ryan Hamilton joined the band on guitar and the line-up was complete. Cytota became absolutely unstoppable.
Cytota mingle metal, hardcore and rock and do it so artfully, that it won’t take you long to get into this charismatically crafted mixture. Brutality and melody interlace into an intense bolt of energetic sound, which sweeps all the nearby surroundings with its powers. Extra heavy verses are followed by choruses full of melody, clear vocals fight with brutal ones, the drum work is furious, the bass is thick and deep and guitars provide excessively punchy riffs. Apparently, Cytota are here to stay.
Verdict: Cytota aim at standing out and they have succeeded in it so far. The band deliver the music of the highest quality and do it with a great deal of confidence and talent, which not all up-and-coming bands are capable of.
