Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World is the directorial debut from screenwriter Lorene Scafaria, best known for her sweet and funny script for Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist. Following on from her adorable comedy with Michael Cera and Kat Dennings comes Seeking A Friend – a dramatic romantic comedy starring Steve Carell and Keira Knightley.
The premise for the film is rather unique and intriguing – if you knew the world was going to end, how would you spend your final days? In Seeking A Friend, a seventy-mile wide asteroid is heading for Earth, with no chance of stopping it. When the terrifying news emerges, Dodge (Carell) finds himself abandoned by his wife.
But Dodge has always played by the rules, and while his friends indulge in reckless behaviour in knowledge of their end, he declines their offers. However, he soon strikes up a friendship with his neighbour, Penny (Knightley), who, although an extrovert, is fixated on her relationship with a self-absorbed musician.
Penny belatedly delivers Dodge a lost letter from his high-school sweetheart, and this changes everthing. Olivia is the love of Dodge’s life, and he is desperate to see her again before it is too late. With a riot blazing below Dodge and Penny’s apartment building, Dodge decides he must seek his true love, while Penny chooses to return to England to see her family one final time.
The two make a pact – if Penny drives Dodge to meet Olivia, he will help her cross the Atlantic to return home. They set off together, and as they journey their lives accelerate, and their outlooks brighten.
