Union Sound Set, the reincarnation of critically acclaimed indie rockers Prego, have returned with the second single from their debut album ‘Start Stop.’ ‘Cause and Resolve’ is a 4 minute epic, engulfing every part of its listener from the outset and refusing to relinquish its grip. Think Snow Patrol, Elbow and The National in a pressure cooker and you’re halfway there. The song is a series of calms and storms, with tranquil verses building to an eruptive chorus of shimmering guitar collisions.
The B side, ‘I know,’ is less colossal; where ‘Cause and Resolve’ engulfs this track seeps, nevertheless getting under your skin and eventually exploding into an instrumental crescendo. We can’t help but feel a sense of deja vu listening to this track, and there is reason for it – Edd Simpson’s vocal performance is almost identical to his brother’s, Fightstar frontman Charlie Simpson. His gruff harmonies provide a sense of earthy rawness over a carefully crafted underscore. ‘Start Stop’ is an album bound for arena stages, and this single is only going to accelerate the process of getting there
