Machine Head have been kicking crowd’s asses in support of their epic ‘The Blackening’ album for a couple of years now but their show has not grown old. It will take a confident band to take the stage before the Oakland quartet. Not the kind to back down from a challenge Hatebreed don’t so much come out with a confident swagger as a full fist punch to the crowds collective face. The constant chants for Machine Head are obliterated by the hardcore outfit’s explosion onto the stage. Their high energy show certainly silencing the doubters here tonight.
The crowd becomes restless and the chanting for Machine Head grows stronger. The lighting throws the venue into a hellish relief before Machine Head are welcomed onto stage by a rabid crowd and the familiar strains of the intro to ‘Clenching the Fists of Descent’. “Behold”!
The tour is in support of ‘The Blackening’ and the band manages to squeeze over half of their magnum opus into their show along with the set-list essentials (You know they’d never make it out of the venue alive if they didn’t play Davidian). The crowd also are treated to some nice surprises.
Through the course of the evening we are treated to the live premiere of ‘All Falls Down’ and ‘The Burning Red’ into ‘Exhale the Vile’ is as unexpected as it is welcome. While classics like ‘Old’, ‘Take My Scars’ and ‘Ten Ton Hammer’ nicely balance the newer material.
The levels are a fraction too high tonight, losing some clarity between the softer vocal sections. But with a show like this is easy to let that slide. After a night of the heaviest heavy metal Rob thanks the crowd in his own inimitable way “Cheers Motherfuckers! Cheers!”. What’s left to say? Cheers Machine Fucking Head! Cheers! [9]
