There are moments within a bands career that act as a yardstick to their progress and a measure of their success. Many bands dream of playing Brixton Academy, a few achieve that goal, fewer still push on to headline the venue. But it takes something rather special for a band to sell out Brixton Academy for their headline show.
The chants for “Lamb of God” before the band even sets a foot on the stage stand testament to the Virginians sky rocketing popularity on UK soil. Tonight is a showcase of 2009’s spectacular album “Wrath” with a smattering of classics from their back catalogue thrown in for good measure.
‘Set to Fail’, ‘Walk With Me In Hell’ and ‘Now You’ve Got Something To Die For’ sets their stall out early. The show is tight and frantic. Randy Blythe stalks the stage and engages the crowd with humility before exploding into the each song. The evolved riffing delivered courtesy of Mark Morton and Willie Adler with the rhythm section of Chris Adler and John Campbell keeping the finely tuned metal machine purring like a v8 on a nitro boost.
Proceedings are brought to a close with ‘Redneck’ and ‘Black Label’. The only respite a brief calm before the encore storm and the haunting intro to ‘Grace’. Look around during any song and you will see a pumped crowd, with devils horns held high and fists pounding the air, faithfully singing (maybe screaming is a more appropriate term) along and pit that is almost constantly in chaotic motion.
This is a no nonsense performance, metal without frills. There are no airs and graces here tonight, just bludgeoning song after bludgeoning song battering at your senses. Demanding your full and undivided attention and rewarding you with a brutal show. As everyone here bears witness to a band that maybe stepping up a division in today’s premier metal acts. [9]
