On this fine August Bank Holiday, while most of us are still suffering the after effects of Reading and Leeds festivals, some kind soul decided to keep the good-times rolling with a balls out punk rock party at Highbury and Islington’s The Garage.
As Failsafe take to the stage with The Gladiator theme the hair on the back of our necks stand on end. It’s an original choice of entrance song but it does work. As the Preston five piece pump out an arsenal of songs, delivered with such vitriol and aplomb nobody can stand still. ‘Common Goal’ is a highlight gets our heads banging. A solid performance and one that will stand them in good stead and watch them climb the ladder to bigger supports and headline shows.
As we wait for Set Your Goals, we take a look around the refurbished Garage, now with its corporate sponsor with their logo all over the shop. They’ve done an amazing job, a well polished venue, but one that can still host punk rock shows like tonight’s. As SYG take to the stage any room down the front is soon gone in the rush forward from the eager crowd. New tracks showcased from their latest offering ‘This will be the Death of us’ go down well with the sweaty mass. But it’s the classics like ‘Goonies Never Say Die!’ that go down a real treat, getting a circle pit going. The odd windmill too. This is how all shows should be, although Set Your Goals are a big band they still manage to keep that community vibe going, where we all feel a part of it, part of the scene and also part of the music. Tonight was the perfect way to spend a bank holiday. 9/10
